Britain's King Charles III reacts as he meets Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC) staff, aid workers and volunteers at St Peter's Church, in London

It’s no secret that King Charles doesn’t do his own weekly shop – but if he did, he’d likely be heading down to Waitrose.

The monarch granted the retailer the Royal Warrant of Appointment to be Grocers and Wine & Spirit Merchants to the Royal Household earlier this year, so it’s fair to say he likes the posh supermarket.

However, his majesty recently revealed he’s a big fan of a surprising feature in another UK supermarket chain.

During a visit to St Peter’s Church in Notting Hill on December 4, he met with volunteers and supporters of the Disasters Emergency Committee. Among the guests were a group of Morrisons workers to whom the king praised the Market Street meat counter.

King Charles, 76, said: ‘I’m so glad Morrisons still have a butchery counter. No one else does.’

The comment seemed to delight the retailer’s employees who said they would share his feedback with HQ, however online people were quick to point out that the royal was mistaken.

Several of the UK’s biggest supermarkets do still in fact have meat counters in their stores, including Waitrose.

Of the 315 Waitrose stores in the UK, more than 260 have meat counters and 51 have Dry Aged Beef counters.

Despite his praise for butcher’s counters, the King is actually thought to have reduced his intake of red meat, following his cancer diagnosis earlier this year.

He likely isn’t eating very much of it at all any more, as he already abstained from meat and fish two days a week, before experiencing health concerns.

Charles previously told the BBC about his diet, and as well as abstaining from meat and fish for two days, he also avoids dairy on one of those days.

His diet is thought to feature foods such as eggs, salad, nutriet-rich breads such as rye, wild mushrooms, seeds and tea with honey.

However, he doesn’t eat lunch, as it’s a ‘luxury’ that interferes with his busy work schedule.
