Waitrose’s list of essential student food items includes bouillon powder, Italian seasoning, and Harissa paste

Students are known for their mediocre and budget food choices.

Adding chilli powder to instant noodles is considered gourmet for cash-strapped youngsters who don’t exactly dabble in the fine art of cookery.

So Waitrose’s list of essentials food items, which would probably considered snazzy to most people, let alone students, hasn’t gone down so well.

Bouillon, organic herbs and Moroccan rose chilli paste at more than four quid a jar aren’t exactly the go-to staples for most youths living in halls or in shared flats with six other people.

According to the upmarket retailer, the must-have items students should be armed with are: Marigold Swiss vegetable bouillon powder (£2), Aspall organic cyder vinegar (£1.70), Waitrose cooks’ ingredients organic Italian seasoning (£1.89), Belazu Rose Harissa paste (£4.35) and Clearspring organic Tamari soya sauce (£3.15).

You know, just the usual stuff.

Waitrose Criticised For List Of 'Essential' Student Food Items
(Picture: Waitrose)

Outraged Twitter user Andrew Stronach posted the ‘starter kits for fledgling cooks’ on his account with the caption: ‘The Waitrose concept of essential cooking staples for new students!?!’

Many users on the social media site shared Andrew’s sentiment, adding that the list looks nothing like the fine cuisine of pot noodles, pasta, microwave rice, and cereal they ate during their years in education.

‘One of my go-to meals at uni was rice and cheese. Just plain white rice with grated cheese. Apparently, I thought it was good. It wasn’t,’ said one user.

‘This is completely ridiculous. Some students may want to try their hand at creative cooking, but these are not essentials. How about Sunflower oil, salt and pepper, garlic bulb, and tomato puree?’ wrote another (though let’s face it, that wouldn’t have made the most scintillating article in Waitrose Magazine).

One parent wrote: ‘Uh oh…my son has just gone off with three jars of coffee, four packs of Super Noodles, two Pot Noodles and a bottle of Nandos peri peri sauce.’

A few were on board with the suggestion though, saying it may encourage students to get into creative cooking.

One former student shared her own uni story: ‘I basically learned to cook as a student. Lived across from a posh supermarket, before closing time we’d buy the reduced to clear veg and concoct a meal out of them.’

Others noted that Waitrose is pretty convenient for reduced food items which can sometimes go on sale for as little as 19p.

So who knows, maybe you’ll find that much-needed Clearspring organic Tamari soya sauce for a bargain price.

We asked Waitrose to comment on the criticisms and they’ve said these ingredients can still be useful to students.

‘All these ingredients go a long way and can be the basis of many simple, tasty and great value home cooked meals,’ said a spokesperson for the Partnership.

Supermarket Iceland ditches plastic wrap on bananas in bid to save 10,000,000 bags

Ten million plastic bags could be saved each year after supermarket giant Iceland announced they are to start selling bananas in recycled paper.

The new packaging is designed to be more environmentally friendly than the current plastic wrapping around the fruit.

Around 120 stores will start to sell the products this week and there will be a national rollout by the end of the year.

Retailer Iceland say they will save 10,000,000 bags each year by using paper to wrap their bananas (Picture: PA)

The retailer said a total of 420,000,000 packs of bananas were sold in the UK each year and urged other supermarkets to follow its lead.

The newly packaged bananas are the first product in any major UK supermarket to bear the Plastic Free Trust Mark, launched by campaign group A Plastic Planet earlier this year.

Iceland said the move was part of its commitment to remove plastic from all of its own-label packaging by 2023.

Iceland managing director Richard Walker said: ‘People have become so used to buying their products wrapped in plastic, or indeed using plastic bags for loose produce, and this has to stop if we are to turn down the tap on plastics.

‘This move alone will have a significant impact on our plastics consumption and is one of the first of many solutions that are in development.

‘Our customers support our move to reduce single use plastic and we are pleased to share this important milestone, with many more to come.’

Waitrose replaced plastic bags with a sticky band on its Duchy Organic brand of bananas last month, saying the move would save eight tonnes of plastic a year.

It said the band was a temporary step before it introduces compostable bags for Waitrose & Partners Duchy bananas in a few months.

John Lewis profits plunge 99% but Dominic Raab says ‘don’t blame Brexit’

John Lewis’ profits have dropped 98.8% amid ‘challenging times’ in the retail sector that its chairman believes is partly because of Brexit.

‘With the level of uncertainty facing consumers and the economy, in part due to ongoing Brexit negotiations, forecasting is particularly difficult but we continue to expect full year profits to be substantially lower than last year for the partnership as a whole,’ the retailer said.

But Brexit Secretary Dominic Raab thinks UK businesses are just using it as an excuse.

‘All I am just gently saying is that it is rather easy for a business to blame Brexit and the politicians rather than to take responsibility for their own situation,’ Mr Raab told BBC’s Today programme.

The John Lewis Partnership, which owns the department store and supermarket Waitrose, posted underlying pre-tax profits of £1.2 million for the six months to 28 July.

This was a dramatic drop on profits, with the company blaming the ‘challenging times’ it had faced.

Pre-tax profits in September 2017 were were reported as £26.6m for the six months to 29 July but this itself was a drop of 53.3% from the period before, which the retailer put down to restructuring costs and changing shopping behaviours.

Sir Charlie Mayfield, chairman of the John Lewis Partnership, hit back at the claims John Lewis was blaming Brexit:

‘This whole thing is so frothy. I didn’t say Brexit was the reason for our result,’ he said.

‘The fact is sterling is weaker, it’s more expensive to import goods… so we have to absorb that within our margin.

‘I’m not going to get into some sort of ding-dong with the secretary of state for all things EU.’

He also talked about the issues John Lewis faced with its slogan of ‘never knowingly undersold’ and that discount periods from other retailers had affected profit margins.

Sir Charlie confirmed the company would be investing £400 million to £500 million a year despite the problems it faced.

‘This will take a lot of hard work from all of our partners but we are confident in our commitment, drive and ability to deliver the partnership’s strategy,’ he said.

He remained optimistic and added the group expected profit growth in Waitrose to continue to be offset by the squeeze at John Lewis.

The government is currently hard at work trying to strike a Brexit deal with the European Union.

Mr Raab added in the BBC radio interview he did not think the government would lose a vote in parliament on its final Brexit deal with Brussels, despite warnings from a former junior minister this week that 80 lawmakers in his Conservatives were prepared to vote against it.

Waitrose is getting rid of all fruit and vegetable plastic bags and 5p single-use plastic carrier bags in all of its stores.

The retailer is expecting to have all the bags removed by March 2019.

It said the move will save 134 million plastic bags, the equivalent of 500 tonnes of plastic a year.

Waitrose and Partners said a home compostable alternative will be used for fruit and vegetable plastic bags.

The new alternative bags will look and feel similar to the plastic ones, apart from printed text saying they are home compostable.

The material will break down in landfill if put in a normal bin and the bags can be placed in food waste caddies or home composted.

Waitrose will initially remove 5p bags from six shops from October 8, at Saxmundham, Gerrards Cross, Keynsham, Dorking, Newark and East Putney, to understand how to manage the changeover as smoothly as possible ahead of their complete removal in March 2019.

It said customers will be told before the change comes into effect in their local shop.

Earlier this year, the retailer announced it would be removing all takeaway disposable coffee cups from its shops by autumn 2018.

It said it is on target to achieve this, with cups now having been removed completely from more than 300 of its 348 shops.

It has also committed to making all its own-label packaging widely recyclable, reusable, or home compostable by 2025 and changes include a pledge not to sell any own-label food in black plastic beyond 2019.

Tor Harris, head of corporate social responsibility, health and agriculture for Waitrose, said: ‘The removal of these bags will change the way our customers, many of whom have been asking us to do this, shop with us in the future.

‘We know we still have a lot to do, but as with our commitment to removing takeaway disposable cups earlier this year, this represents another major step forward in reducing our use of plastics.’

Waitrose change name of ‘gender specific’ sandwich because it’s ‘sexist’

Waitrose is changing the name of a sandwich from its Heston Blumenthal range after customers said it was sexist.

Some shoppers said the ‘Gentleman’s Smoked Chicken Caesar Roll’ was ‘gender specific’ as its name appeared to suggest only men could eat it.

The roll contains anchovy mayonnaise, similar to a classic product called Gentleman’s Relish, which was created in the 19th century.

Amy Lame, who was appointed by Sadiq Khan as London’s first Night Czar in 2016, shared an image of the £2.85 sandwich on Twitter with a smirking emoji.

‘I never knew sandwiches were gender specific,’ she said.

‘I’m female but thankfully Waitrose let me purchase this anyway.’

The post touched a few nerves on social media, with some saying Pink Lady apples, Lady Grey tea and lady fingers could now be subjected to name changes.

Despite the historical nature of the name, Waitrose announced it was changing it so not to ‘cause offence’.

‘It’s never our intention to cause offence – we’re not dictating who should eat this sandwich,’ Waitrose said in a statement.

‘We hope anyone who tries it will love the distinctive flavours.’

The name change follows the news that Kleenex will re-brand its ‘Mansize’ tissues after shoppers said the name was sexist.

The company behind Kleenex, Kimberly-Clark, confirmed the product will now be called ‘Kleenex Extra Large’.

Packages for the tissues describe them as ‘confidently strong’ and ‘comfortingly soft’.

Kleenex mansize tissues

Kimberly-Clark told Britain’s Daily Telegraph that it in ‘no way suggests’ that being both soft and strong was ‘an exclusively masculine trait, nor do we believe that the Mansize branding suggests or endorses gender inequality.’

‘We are always grateful to customers who take time to tell us how our products can be improved, and we carefully consider all suggestions,’ the company said in a statement.

The tissues, which had been on shelves for 60 years, were launched at a time when large cotton handkerchiefs were still very popular and the brand offered ‘a unique disposable alternative’.

It remains one of their most popular products, with over 3.4 million people buying the tissues every year.

Kimberly-Clark is not the first company to run into a branding issue forced by changing social views.

Stationery maker Bic received a backlash when it tried to market pink and purple pens ‘for her’.

Amazon was flooded by reviews poking fun at the strategy and the notion that it was ‘designed to fit comfortably in a woman’s hand’.

Waitrose magazine editor tells vegan journalist to write about killing vegans

The editor of Waitrose magazine has come under fire for telling a vegan food journalist to write about ‘killing vegans’.

William Sitwell, who also regularly appears as a critic on Masterchef, told Selene Nelson to ‘expose their hypocrisy’ when she pitched him a series of articles for the magazine based on plant based recipes.

His response letter was shared on Twitter by a friend of the journalist, who said she had emailed in about writing the vegan series for the upmarket supermarket’s own publication.

Responding to the pitch , Sitwell wrote: ‘Hi Selene. Thanks for this.

‘How about a series on killing vegans, one by one. Ways to trap them? How to interrogate them properly?

‘Expose their hypocrisy? Force-feed them meat? Make them eat steak and drink red wine?’

Selene described the email response as ‘hostile’. She went on to ask Sitwell about his personal opinion of vegans to which he responded: ‘I like the idea of a column called The Honest Vegan; a millennial’s diary of earnest endeavour and bacon sandwiches…’

A spokesman for Waitrose responded on Twitter to say ‘even though this was a private email William’s gone too far and his words are extremely inappropriate, insensitive and absolutely do not represent our views’.

In a statement sent to Buzzfeed News, Sitwell said: ‘I love and respect people of all appetites be they vegan, vegetarian or meat eaters, which I show week in week out through my writing, editing and broadcasting.

‘I apologise profusely to anyone who has been offended or upset by this.’

Sitwell edits Waitrose Kitchen magazine – which on its website claims to have 680,000 readers and features Pippa Middleton and Yotam Ottolenghi as columnists — while also writing about food for several major UK publications.

He also regularly appears on Masterchef UK as a critic.

Selene told Buzzfeed she had ‘never seen anything like it’.

She added: ‘If William Sitwell wants to continue eating meat and hating vegans, that’s his prerogative, but to have this attitude towards others when he’s representing Waitrose is seriously bizarre.’

The Humane Society said Waitrose had not done enough to distance itself from the editor’s ‘vile comments’.

‘It will look very much like their newly launched and much trumpeted vegan range is little more than blatant opportunism, exploiting people they have no respect for,’ a spokesperson said.

‘Eating plant-based food is about making compassionate decisions for animals, the planet and your own health, so it’s disappointing for that to be met with hostility, but I do think it’s becoming increasingly rare for people to have such a negative reaction.

‘Delicious tasting food and helping to save the planet, and lives, is quite a winning combination.’

Waitrose magazine editor quits after letter about ‘killing vegans’

The editor of Waitrose Food magazine has stepped down after suggesting a vegan journalist write a series of stories about ‘killing vegans’ and force-feeding them meat.

William Sitwell, 48 – who has also appeared on the BBC’s Masterchef as a critic – caused outrage by telling Selene Nelson that making vegans ‘eat steak and drink red wine’ would ‘expose their hypocrisy’.

The ‘hostile’ email came after the food writer suggested a ‘plant-based meal series’ to Mr Sitwell for the upmarket supermarket’s magazine.

Today Mr Sitwell announced he has resigned from the role, a move Waitrose & Partners described as ‘right and proper’.

The company said in a statement: ‘We have been informed by John Brown Media, who produce the Waitrose & Partners Food Magazine, that William Sitwell is stepping down as editor of Waitrose & Partners Food magazine with immediate effect.

‘In the light of William’s recent email remarks, we’ve told John Brown Media that we believe this is the right and proper move – we will be working with them to appoint a new editor for the magazine.

‘We have had a relationship with William for almost 20 years and are grateful for his contribution to our business over that time.’

Yesterday the Humane Society said Waitrose had not done enough to distance itself from the editor’s ‘vile comments’.

Waitrose shades John Lewis’ Elton John Christmas advert and it’s so savage

$

Sir Elton John is the star of the new John Lewis Christmas advert (Picture: PA Wire)

The festive season is officially upon us, which means presents, awful cracker jokes, and all the Christmas adverts you can ever imagine.

All eyes were on John Lewis as they unveiled their offering last week, which Elton John fronted in a two-minute tour of his life, set to Your Song.

But, while we were all left a little emotional by the ad – and humming that song for the rest of the day – Waitrose decided to take it one step further and shade the campaign.

In the clip, which appeared for the first time during I’m A Celebrity, a youngster could be seen dragging her parents in front of the telly to watch the John Lewis ad for the first time together.

So far, so sweet, right?

That didn’t last long as the parents grabbed the remote and fast-forwarded their way through it, clearly not that impressed.

When they eventually got to the end, they cooed over Elton for precisely one second, before heading off for a snack, with a tag line stating: ‘Too Good To Wait’.

It ends with the dad stating he ‘preferred the one with the penguin’.

So. Savage.

Waitrose aren’t the only having a bit of festive banter at John Lewis’ expense over the ad.

Taking to Twitter, Lidl were quick off the mark as they made a joke over having cheaper pianos than the department store.

Alongside an advert for their own keyboard, priced at £89.99, they wrote: ‘Just because you don’t have £872 to spend on a piano, doesn’t mean you can’t be the next Elton. #EltonJohnLewis.’

Poking fun at Elton’s hit It’s A Little Bit Funny, they amusingly added the tagline: ‘It’s a Lidl bit funny’.

But John Lewis wasn’t about to let their rumoured £5million advert get shaded that quickly, quickly replying: ‘It’s a Lidl bit cheaper.’

All of the lols were had.

The 71-year-old was recently unveiled as the star of the clip – which took us all through an emotional run down of his life, from when he first played piano.

He was thought to have taken home £5million for the advert, but reps have confirmed part of the sum went to charity.

‘The speculation in recent months around Elton’s fee for appearing in the ad has been wildly inaccurate,’ they told the Daily Star.

‘When first approached to be part of it though, Elton requested that a portion of his fee was to be donated to the Elton John Charitable Trust.’

Teenage boy hatches duck egg he bought from Waitrose

Have you ever wondered if you could hatch a supermarket egg into a chick?

A smart teenager has actually managed to do it.

William Atkins, 14, successfully reared a duckling after buying 12 Gladys-May’s Braddock Whites free range duck eggs from Waitrose.

EXC PRINT BEFORE WEB / Daily Mail - Jeremy the duckling with William Atkins. 14 year old schoolboy William Atkins from Sutton Coldfield, who has hatched a duckling from Waitrose supermarket egg, using a home incubator that he bought from ebay for ??40.

But it wasn’t as simple as just taking them home and putting them under a lamp.

The teenager placed the £2.30 eggs in an incubator he purchased from eBay for £40 and then waited three days until he finally detected a heartbeat.

William, from Sutton Coldfield, West Midlands, told Daily Mail: ‘From then on the unborn duckling grew bigger inside the shell every day.

‘Just over three weeks later the egg began rocking and a few days after that the tiny duckling pecked its way out.’

A chick, who was named Jeremy, would eventually peck its way out 28 days later, which left the schoolboy feeling ‘over the moon’.

He added his mum was also surprised but she didn’t think it was a good idea for him to have a pet duckling in his bedroom so they decided to give it to a local farm when it was a little older.

It was third time lucky for William after he originally tried to hatch qual and hen eggs.

The egg’s producer Clarence Court admitted it was possible to hatch an egg from one of its products but said it was very difficult.

A spokesperson said: ‘The separation of males from females relies wholly upon the skill of very few qualified people. Inevitably, the odd sexing error is made.

‘Our ducks are kept in small flocks with access to the outdoors. In this open-air environment, while it is infrequent, our ducks may attract the attention of wild drakes. So, while it is very unusual for males and females to come into contact with one another, it is not impossible.”

‘Fertilised eggs are harmless to eat, and without incubation would be totally indistinguishable from unfertilised eggs.’

Dad accused of stealing in Waitrose ‘because he had tattoos’

A heavily-tattooed dad claims Waitrose staff accused him of shoplifting due to his alternative appearance.

Dominic Riches, 24, was shopping with his son in Trumpington, Cambridge, when he said two employees accused him of theft.

‘I left the shop and got to the bit near the traffic lights not that far from the shop and two employees came after me. They ran up behind me and shouted “stop there”,’ he said.

‘I stopped because I had nothing to hide. They said they have CCTV footage of me taking something from the shop.

‘This was just an excuse to get me to go back into the shop with them. I went back with them because I hadn’t taken anything.

‘When I went back in that’s what they found too. I hadn’t taken anything.’

Dominic believes the members of staff stopped him because he has tattoos on his hands, calling it ‘discrimination’.

He told Cambridgeshire Live that the worst part was having his son with him – and that the employees did not apologise when they realised their mistake.

He was offered £50 to spend in store as compensation (Picture: Google)

Instead, he spoke to a manager, who offered him a bottle of champagne as compensation, which Dominic declined.

Another manager then called him about the incident and reportedly told him that the employees had been ‘open and honest’ about what happened.

After explaining his side of the story, Dominic was offered £50 to spend in Waitrose, but was unhappy that the manager did not mention anything about the employees being disciplined.

A Waitrose spokesperson said: ‘Everyone is welcome at Waitrose & Partners and we sincerely apologise for any distress caused to Mr Riches, it was a genuine error by a member of staff and shouldn’t have happened.’
